Direct Cremations in Detroit, MI
Direct cremation is a basic cremation option that can help your family
to circumvent much of the planning and costs associated with a formal
funeral service; however, you will still have the option to hold memorial
services for your loved one at any time after a direct cremation. Swansons
Funeral Home, Inc. offers direct cremation in Detroit in addition to our
other cremation and
funeral ceremony options. Our staff is here to help you through this difficult time by providing
the support and information you need to make a memorialization choice
that is meaningful for your family.
How Is Direct Cremation Different?
Direct cremation is a cremation option in which the body is cremated shortly
after death. The major difference between direct cremation and traditional
cremation is the fact that there is no wake or other type of funeral service
prior to direct cremation. Thus, direct cremation can offer families a
few distinct benefits:
- Direct cremation circumvents the need for a casket, embalming, and any
other preparations or transportation that might be necessary to accommodate
a wake or viewing service.
- Direct cremation does not involve a wake or formal funeral, meaning there
is no need to plan or pay for these services.
- Direct cremation allows families the option to hold a memorial service
at a time of their choosing, which can be more convenient in terms of
cost and travel arrangements for family members and friends.
- Direct cremation offers an alternative to burial, which requires the purchase
of a cemetery plot and can have an impact on the environment. However,
you can still choose to bury cremated remains or inter them in a columbarium
if you wish.
The Steps Involved in Direct Cremation
Direct cremation involves fewer steps than a traditional cremation or other
funeral service. Swansons Funeral Home, Inc. can help you plan a direct
cremation and provide transportation to the crematory. The steps involved
in direct cremation are as follows:
- The body is transported to the funeral home or crematory where cremation
will take place.
- Your family must file certain paperwork to authorize the cremation; your
funeral director will help you with this paperwork as part of the direct
- The body is heated in a cremation oven, also called a "retort,"
until it has been reduced to its most basic constituents.
- The cremains are returned to you in either a plain container provided by
the crematorium or an urn of your choosing.
Direct Cremation Services
Our direct cremation package includes the basic services of the funeral
director and staff, the crematory fee, and transportation to the crematory.
This is offered at $495. If you want to arrange a direct cremation, you can use an alternative
container. Alternative containers encase the body and can be made of materials
like fiberboard or composition materials (with or without an outside covering).
